After Napoleon invaded Portugal, the monarchy moved the capital to Rio De Janeiro in Brazil-- the only time a European capital has been housed outside Europe.

 It sounds like things could have stayed in Brazil for a while, but for unrest back in Portugal.  And, it led to Brazilian independence.
